Use Sponge Mats Instead of LECA or Egg Crate

Sponge mats provide a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution for creating effective drainage layers in tropical vivariums.

As an alternative to traditional methods like using expanded clay pellets or constructing a false bottom with egg crate, sponge mats have recently gained popularity among vivarium enthusiasts.

Large sponge mats (or rolls) can be purchased online and allow for easy customization. Simply cut the sponge to fit the bottom of your vivarium enclosure and lay it in place. That’s it!

This straightforward process eliminates the need for complicated setups and provides a solid foundation for your vivarium design.

Once the sponge mat is in position, you have the flexibility to choose how to proceed. You can place sphagnum moss directly on top of the sponge mat, or you can opt for a substrate barrier and soil combination.

The simplicity of the sponge mat approach streamlines the setup process and provides a cleaner, more visually appealing appearance.

Another benefit of sponge mats is their versatility in creating slopes within the vivarium. By cutting various pieces and arranging them, you can easily build slopes and contours to add depth and visual interest to your vivarium.

This not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also allows you to use less soil, reducing the weight of the vivarium and making it more manageable.
